Compare business
gas rates now.

Staying loyal to your gas supplier might be costing you more than you realise. Business gas prices vary regularly, and without a tailored deal, your company could be overspending. Here's why comparing rates — and switching — makes smart business sense:

Escape costly rates

Gas bills gone up? You might be on expensive out-of-contract rates. Act quickly to avoid overpaying — we can even negotiate with your current supplier if you’d prefer not to switch.

Fix your price, secure savings

The gas market is unpredictable. Locking in a fixed rate over a longer term can give your business pricing stability and peace of mind for the future.

Only trusted suppliers

We partner with reliable, vetted suppliers known for service and value — no fly-by-night operators. We manage the switch, so there’s no hassle or downtime for your business.

What costs make up a business gas bill?

Gas unit rate

This is the price you pay for each kilowatt hour (kWh) of gas your business consumes. If you're on a fixed tariff, this cost remains consistent during your agreement.

Daily standing charge

This is a fixed daily charge that covers the cost of transporting gas to your site and maintaining your supply connection, no matter how much gas you use.

VAT and usage level

Most businesses pay 20% VAT on their gas bills, though some may qualify for 5% based on usage. If you’re VAT-registered, this amount is typically reclaimable.

Credit rating

Your company’s financial history and credit profile can impact the gas tariffs you're offered — better credit often means more competitive rates.

Environmental charges

Your bill may include levies such as the Climate Change Levy (CCL), which supports government environmental initiatives and is charged on most business gas use.

Market conditions

Changes in the wholesale gas market affect supplier costs. Prices may be higher or lower depending on global supply and demand at the time you agree your deal.

How much gas does a typical business use?

If your business gas bills seem unusually high, the issue might not just be the rate you’re paying — it could be down to how much you’re using. Everyday habits like leaving heating on for too long or working in a poorly insulated building can lead to excessive gas usage.

Microbusinesses

Usually with under 10 employees and less than £2 million in yearly turnover, microbusinesses typically consume around 10,000 kWh of gas per year.

Small businesses

Companies with fewer than 50 staff and revenue below £10 million typically use about 25,000 kWh of gas annually.

Medium-sized businesses

With up to 250 employees and annual turnover under £50 million, medium businesses tend to use around 45,000 kWh of gas each year on average.

If your gas use goes beyond these averages, you may fall into the high-consumption or industrial category. For tailored advice, it’s worth looking into large business energy strategies.

Who supplies your business gas?

If you're unsure who your business gas supplier is, you're not alone. Long contracts or inherited premises can make it tricky to keep track. You can usually find the supplier's name on your most recent bill or in past email communications. Alternatively, you can call the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524 or visit the Find My Supplier website — you’ll need your MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) to use these services.

At Ignite, we work with a trusted panel of suppliers to help you find competitive gas rates tailored to your business needs.

These are just some of the suppliers we have access to — we can source quotes from a wide range of providers across the UK market.

What do you need to compare business gas prices?

Starting your business gas comparison is easy with just your postcode. We use smart data to make the process faster, but having a few extra details will help us find the best deal for you:

  • Your business address – the location of your gas supply
  • Your current supplier and account number (if available)
